Background

The MESDWG was established in 2005 as a pilot project. In February 2006, seven additional provinces/territories were selected to establish their own ESD Working Groups with the intent to have ESD Working Groups in all provinces and territories in Canada. Representatives of each of these working groups sit on the ESD Canada National Council. Today in the fall of 2010 there are ten ESD Provincial Working Groups across the country.

Each individual ESD Working Group supports and fosters an ESD culture in their jurisdictions. These groups engage senior leaders from provincial Ministries, the federal government, the formal, informal and non-formal education sectors, business, and community organizations to determine the goals, priorities and objectives for ESD activities and the support required for regional advancement.
